The Bigfoot duo took their stickers to Van’s Pool Party in Los Angeles earlier this year, kicking off the campaign at one of skateboarding’s biggest competitions. She knows the tricks, she can call them out quickly, she knows the personal stories of the skaters, she has a passion for what she does, and she still rips. White certainly has the skills to commentate, which she attributes to having four sisters and being Jewish, giving her a long history of “explaining things loudly.” She’s also already done the work at a number of competitions, albeit not Olympic ones. Since this is new, we can influence them.” “They don’t really know and we can show them. “People don’t really know skateboarding,” says Caron. In May of this year, Bigfoot launched an online petition for Alex White to become NBC Universal’s official skateboarding commentator for Tokyo 2020 (Check out Bigfoot’s very entertaining interview with her here).Īs skateboarding enters the world stage via the Olympics, Bigfoot’s hope is that the competition can start out with better representation from the beginning. And it’s just natural for me to talk a lot,” says White. “Whenever I watch skateboarding I am so enthralled. White initially protested, but eventually her passion for commentating outweighed her discomfort with being the focus of an online campaign. Words by Maya Haptas / White IS the authentic voice of women’s skateboarding,” says McGuire. When they heard about skateboarding being in the Olympics, they immediately thought of their friend Alex White, and how they could support a bid for her to become an NBC Olympic commentator. However, over at Bigfoot Magazine, co-founders Amy Caron and Migzy McGuire came up with a clever idea to keep the Olympics core. “Alex White IS the authentic voice of women’s skateboarding.” NBC could not be reached for comment for this story. Sadly, NBC is rumored to be leaning towards their existing talent: professional snowboarders. To skateboarders, it is obvious that NBC should hire an actual skateboarder. More specifically, who will literally present it, as the first ever Olympic skateboard commentator. So now, the more important question is how it will be presented. Skateboarding will be in the Olympics for the first time next year, whether we want it to or not.
